Kusal, Nissanka and Chameera Lead Sri Lanka to Series-Opening Win

June.04 (Mirror Sports) - Sri Lanka took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series with a convincing 41-run victory over West Indies at Sabina Park, thanks to key contributions from Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka and Dushmantha Chameera.

After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka posted a competitive 303 for 7. Kusal Mendis led the charge with a fluent 72 off 62 balls, while Nissanka anchored the innings with 79. Charith Asalanka added 45, and Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 44 to provide a strong finish.

Kusal's aggressive knock shifted the momentum after a cautious start, as he shared a crucial 136-run second-wicket partnership with Nissanka. Liyanage and Asalanka then added valuable runs in the closing overs to push Sri Lanka beyond the 300-run mark.

West Indies began their chase positively, reaching 50 without loss inside six overs. However, Sri Lanka's bowlers gradually tightened their grip on the contest.

Chameera starred with the ball, claiming 4 for 67, while Maheesh Theekshana delivered an economical spell of 2 for 26. Wanindu Hasaranga also played his part as the hosts struggled to build substantial partnerships.

West Indies captain Shai Hope fought hard with 56, but regular wickets derailed the chase. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 262 with four balls remaining.

The victory gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series and puts them in a strong position heading into the second ODI.
