Colombo, April 29 (Daily Mirror) - Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa admitted that there seems to be a mistake in the figures presented by National People's Power (NPP) MP Nilanthi Kottahachchi about the cost of text messages sent by the President for the New Year during the previous government.
Speaking in a television interview, the Minister said that MP Kottahachchi claimed the government had saved Rs. 98 million this year because the President did not send the usual Sinhala and Tamil New Year text messages.
However, the Minister said the amount mentioned by MP Kottahachchi seems to be incorrect and that she got this information from a report shared on social media.
"The National People's Power came to power to change the country’s political culture. So, we must take responsibility for what we say. Mistakes like this can harm us. We will do our best to correct them," the Minister said.
When asked about government MPs making false statements that could damage the government's credibility, Minister Jayatissa said the party takes such matters seriously and has already taken action.
"We have spoken to our party members about these issues and taken steps to fix them. We don’t treat these situations lightly," he added.
He also explained that the actions or statements of one or a few MPs should not lead people to think the entire government is making false claims.
The Minister said that in such situations, the government takes responsibility by correcting the mistake at the Cabinet press briefing or apologizing.
