State Minister Arundika Fernando said yesterday that the Attorney General's Department has appointed a King's Counsel in Britain to appear for the case filed by the insurer of the X-Press Pearl in the UK court to limit the compensation which could be paid to Sri Lanka over the X-Press Pearl disaster.
Responding to a question raised by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara, he said the Attorney General informed him regarding the matter and that the King’s Counsel was making an intervention against the downsizing of the compensation.
MP Jayasekara questioned as to why the AG’s Department was not making any intervention in this case at least now before the verdict was given.
Minister Fernando said the insurer has filed the case claiming that the valuation of the ship was £19.5 million and that the compensation should not exceed the valuation.
NPP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake also questioned as to why the AG’s Department is not showing any keenness to intervene in this case. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)
