Kelaniya University Senior Lecturer’s wife too succumbs to injuries from accident

Colombo, March 26 (Daily Mirror) - The wife of Dr. N.D.G. Gayantha, Head of the Psychology Unit at the Department of Philosophy, University of Kelaniya, also succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital today.

The tragic accident occurred on the Central Expressway on March 18 while Dr. Gayantha was returning from a trip to Nagadeepa, Jaffna, with his wife and three young children.

The van, travelling from Kurunegala towards Mirigama, lost control and crashed on to a lorry ahead. Dr. Gayantha was injured and died after being admitted to the hospital.

Dr. Gayantha's wife too passed away today from her injuries.

Government should invest more on night time illumination of expressways. Probably use solar so that no extra cost for illumination. Secondly start checking the long vehicles rear lights and lighting system works. At least make it compulsory to have stickers visible at night for long vehicles and heavy vehicles, so that even if lights system fail, the rear is visible for other drivers.

Driving advice - Never ever drive a vehicle if all other passengers are sleeping and only the driver is awake. Sleepiness is contagious. There should be someone awake and talking with the driver to keep him alert. Especially during the night.

These tragic accidents will still not change the Sri Lankan driver's behaviour. Once on a driving seat, everyone thinks that he or she alone owns the entire road. So everyone wants to overtake everyone else , honking, flashing lights are really annoying but everyone is doing it. The police does very little to catch irrant drivers. The fine payment process is too cumbersome so the both parties agree to settle it on the spot mostly the policeman taking the cash. So it is better to be extra vigilant while driving here to avoid So many bad drivers around.
