Keheliya, others granted bail in substandard medicine case

Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and several co-defendants indicted over the alleged misappropriation of government funds in the purchase of substandard medicines were released on bail by the Colombo High Court today.

A three-judge bench ordered that each accused be granted bail on a cash deposit of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bonds of Rs. 5 million. The court also imposed a foreign travel ban and directed them to surrender their passports.

The indictments against Rambukwella and the others were formally presented before the bench earlier in the day. Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed court that the Attorney General opposed granting bail to the accused.
