Kazakhstan tourist dies, four Russians rescued in drowning incidents

Colombo, Feb 07 (Daily Mirror) - A Kazakhstan national died, while four Russian nationals were rescued after separate drowning incidents in the Southern Province yesterday.

The victim, a Kazakhstan citizen, drowned off the Bentota beach after being swept away by strong waves. Local residents rescued him and rushed him to the Balapitiya Hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon admission.

The Bentota police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

In a separate incident, three Russian nationals, including a 27-year-old woman, drowned while bathing off the Hikkaduwa beach in the morning. Police lifeguards rescued them.

In addition, a 38-year-old Russian national was rescued by a police lifeguard when he nearly drowned off the Ahungala beach.

If SL wants to promote tourism heavily, it will need to have a properly trained life saving brigade in popular beaches. This is a must as untrained locals can't do this in an adhoc manner. These are basic things that it needs to implement with a vision. All those public servants warming up chairs in tourism ministry won't really help.

You are writing comments without a slight knowledge of tourism sector or the lifeguards or officials in the government, it appears that you are the one warming up the chair and coming up with these silly comments. On daily basis, lifeguards rescue so many people . In this occation too Lifeguards rescued the tourists but one died. Sign boards exist warning the tourists about risks of being drowned but risk takers ignore such advice. Precautions can be improved but it is not a guarantee that everyone will be saved if undue risks are taken.

Editor please note: Drowned means death by immersion. So the statement " three Russians drowned
