Katunayake, Jan 26 (Daily Mirror) - It was recently reported that it was impossible to turn on the lights of the Katunayake expressway as thieves have cut and removed the high-voltage electricity cables.

It was reported that the robberies had taken place around six months ago.

It was also revealed by the officials that the removal of copper wire from concrete covers of the new “Kalyani” Bridge, which was built with a Japanese loan and the removal of cables of the Katunayake expressway has caused a loss of 286 million rupees.

I have personal experince of this. I used the Katunayake expressway during the night in several instances. The lights are not on in most sections, and the visibility is extremely low in most sections. It is pretty dangerous to drive.

Action must be taken against authorities for keeping the highway in darkness. The highway is not a free mode of travel. Pople pay a toll and therefore it must be maintained, serviced and ensure there is safety day and night. For overspreading, can implement speed camera and charge a fine.

The government has money to pay for ex presidents' lifestyles, provide support staff vehicles, and take overseas trips, but basic things such as maintaining roads, public safety, and all other essentials are neglected. It's shameful for the government to admit that electrical wires have been stolen n highways and give all the excuses under the sun. The bottom line is, the politicians and the GOSL are not serving the people but themselves. What has Ranil Wickremasighe done to recover the stollen funds, investigate the scams and bring the culprits to justice? Absolutely nothing.

Street lights are a must for safety at night. With this regard for a highway where motorists are permitted to drive at 100 kmph , street lights are essential. Our airport highway is lit only at toll gates. RDA should take full responsibility for deadly accidents taking place so frequently. Kuddas removing power lines is no excuse.

Thieves stealing the cables on a high way and no one knows who were they. They are probably the ones who are working with the road authorities. They may be doing this as a maintenance work so no one suspects thefts. Keeping an important highway dark at night is an act of criminal negligence by concerned parties. Why can't they go for solar based lighting.

This robbery is done no one other than those working for road authorities. They are the ones who will do this. Any investigation to find out who stole these cables, should begin with those who are authorised to do maintenance on these highways.
