Colombo, April 13 (Daily Mirror) - The majority of the Katunayaka expressway section has been plunged into darkness this evening as the lamp posts have failed to function.
According to information shared by toll gate officials, the highway streetlights are not functioning due to the electric cables being cut.The officials elaborated that the underground cables have been stolen.
This is not the first time the electric cables of the highway have been stolen. In January, the high-voltage electricity cables of the Katunayake expressway were removed which caused a loss of Rs. 286 million.
Similarly, last year in January, wires worth Rs. 2.4 million from four lamp posts were stolen in the Wedikanda area using an axe.

What is the expressway police doing? Last time I drove there , was 11 km/h too fast. They stopped me and asked me if I have a arrack bottle for them. There are about 120000 corrupt and lazy police person in every corner of the county. This is Sri Lanka

This is an unforseen circumstance. But it is regrettable that the highways authority switches off lights on the highway to save money but still charges thr full fee ! The common man gets played out all the time.

Belgium was the only country in Europe whose highways were illuminated at night. But that too has been history since 2022. Why does a bankrupt country like Sri Lanka have to waste money on expressway lighting? So that politicians can drive themselves to death at night with lighting?
