Colombo, Dec. 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Kandy Municipal Council has decided to remove all pavement hawkers in the city after December 31. Mayor of Kandy Chandrasiri Wijenayake said the decision to remove payment hawkers had been taken in June this year, but they were given time till December 31 on sympathetic grounds. He said the pavement hawkers have been provided space in alternative locations but they attempt to occupy the pavements. He stressed that this decision would not be reversed since the power in the Municipal Council, the President and the Parliament is held by the National People’s Power. Meanwhile, a senior official of the Municipal Council said a recent survey revealed that about 500 unauthorized pavement hawkers in the Kandy city and several others have taken to the trade in the hope of receiving land in alternative locations.

Please do the same in Colombo Pettah area all the 1,2,3,and 4 cross streets Colombo would be better for all concerned . Now it is almost impossible to walk through the areas.

This is a good idea but make sure you provide some small market place in some specific locations : not in one place but in different places so that we could create a market culture people will where to go to buy things and goods not on streets but in specific markets like fruit market or like market let us have some open market places in different locations: It is up or our MCs to create such markets in each town instead of leaving traders in limbo waiting to find some places :

This is the best decision taken to get the Kandy city back to the status of a metro city. The present Mayor should be congratulated for this bold decision for the sake of developing the city to a high standard of a metro city.

Good decision but it is only good if it is implemented. The payement hawkers are given alternatives but either they rent those out or new hawkers occupy the pavement again, same thing is happening for those shanty dwellers who were given houses but shanties are still occupied.

Good move. Suggesting Kandy MC to identify a plot and build a a simple covered mall to accommodate these hawkers, with all infrastructure facilities. Accordingly charge the hawkers, who occupy this facility.
