Sri Lanka’s tourism sector witnessed a robust start to June, with arrivals in the first five days surging by 35.92 percent year-on-year to 21,293. This marks a significant increase from the 15,666 tourists who arrived during the same period in 2024.
However, this initial momentum may not be enough to meet the ambitious target for the month, as current trends project a potential shortfall of nearly 50,000 arrivals.
While the daily arrival rate has been strong, averaging 4,259 in the first five days of June, maintaining this pace for the entire month would result in approximately 127,758 tourists. This figure falls considerably short of the official forecast of 177,257 arrivals set for June 2025, indicating a potential deficit of 49,500 tourists if the arrival rate does not accelerate.
The challenge for June mirrors a broader trend observed throughout the first five months of the year. Despite a strong overall performance that saw total arrivals from January 1st to June 5th reach 1,051,096, the sector has consistently trailed its forecasted goals. The cumulative difference between forecasted and actual arrivals from January to May 2025 amounted to a significant 279,452.
This shortfall occurred even as Sri Lanka’s tourism rebound surpassed pre-crisis levels in several months. Notably, arrivals in January, February, and May of 2025 exceeded those of the corresponding months in the benchmark year of 2018, with increases of 13,837, 4,599, and 3,453 tourists, respectively.
While the Sri Lankan government and tourism bodies have been striving to establish the country as a year-round tourist hotspot, tangible outcomes remain elusive. The launch of the long-awaited global promotion campaign, set for June 27th, has raised industry hopes for a significant surge in visitor numbers during the approaching winter season.
In the first five days of June, India accounted for 28.2 percent of all arrivals, with 6,014 tourists out of a total of 21,293. Following India were the United Kingdom (1,884), China (1,277), Maldives (1,173), and Australia (985).
Notably absent from the top ten source markets for early June is Russia. This is a significant shift, as Russia stands as the second-largest source market for the year-to-date, having brought in 110,818 tourists. The drop-off is largely attributed to the seasonal cessation of summer charter flights, which significantly impacts arrival numbers from the country during this period. The United Kingdom, Germany, and China have remained strong, rounding out the top five source markets for the year so far.
Looking at the year so far, India also holds the top spot, contributing 20 percent of total arrivals with 210,074 tourists. The cumulative total from all countries up to June 5th was 1,051,096.
