Colombo, February 2 (Daily Mirror) - Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya has laid the blame for his team’s heavy defeat at the feet of the batsmen, calling their performance in Galle "irresponsible" following a crushing loss to Australia by an innings and 242 runs.
Speaking at a media conference after the match, Jayasuriya expressed disappointment with the batting display and emphasised the need for greater mental resilience from the players.
"This wicket was not that difficult. The players need to learn how to handle pressure and bat with confidence. Test cricket is unique, with varied situations, and it's crucial to manage these moments effectively. We have a strong batting line-up, but we didn’t perform well today. The batsmen need to convert their starts into big innings," Sanath said.
Sri Lanka endured their heaviest defeat in Test cricket history on Saturday, as Australia dominated to claim a commanding victory by an innings and 242 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

First u resign immediately as head coach without blaming others for poor performance at Galle. U and select committee must take responsibility to select underperformed players like Dimuth and Mathews as they continue failures from the new Zealand tour. They both deprived to selection very talented players like samuditha,Janith Laiyange. It also terribly selection of new spinner instead wellalage.

There is a region called Jaffna where cricket was first introduced before it was introduced in Colombo or anywhere else. Why, not a single player is from Jaffna ?

Do not spread wrong information Sunday, 02 February 2025 02:32 PM
Please do not spread wrong information. Cricket and football were introduced to Jaffna after they were introduced to Colombo and Kandy. The time Cricket and Football were introduced to Jaffna at Jaffna Central College for the first time in the northern province, the games were already being played in other parts of the country. Is there any talented players from Jaffna at the moment to get the debut? Viyaskanth could not make an impression yet.

Cricket can only be played by MORATUWA BOYS. None can be found from else where in the country. Even if found only one chance unlike Mathew. Dimuth and many other jokers who ruin the game. First coach Jayasuriya must resign get a foreign coach get rid off the mediocre guys . Select some young boys from outside Moratuwa and Panadura. We will be there in a few years

Not a wise comment. It's not about the ethnicity. There is no one suitable to be selected to the 1st eleven from Jaffna yet.

Yeh, you praise him when the team wins...wake up man you cannot win all the time. Best teams have to find what went wrong and move on with a new plan. Coaches resigning doesn't help. Players have their responsibility and that what they are paid for to perform. On another note SL team fielded so poorly... if they had taken th catches, reviews ... you'd be saying SL l did it and our team and coach...are genius...let's move on for the next game and should SL fail then ...talk

Get rid of old man Mathews and no good Jayasuriya Sunday, 02 February 2025 12:32 PM
Mathews has long been an albatross on the neck of the team. Too much of the SLPP biased media support him. Seeing worthless losers like him no wonder the ICC will allocate less test matches for us, as country lacks good attitude so dropping country when no one internationally is the natural reaction. Terrible Jayasuriya blames batters. What was he doing during the 600 plus runs accumulation, just doing nothing as usual? What advice did he have before our second innings. Removing no good, no luck Jayasuriya is a must for Lankan cricket.

Sri Lankan team that faced heavy losses back in the 80s performed way better than the current team. "Irresponsible" is too good a word. Sanath can't run away from the fact that he hadn't done his job as the head coach. Just because he was a great batsman doesn't necessarily mean he would be a good teacher. They need someone external as the head coach not a local person due to political influences. Ideally someone from a western country like the one we had (Dev Watmore) at the time SL won the world cup.

If that guy Vanderputin could have been putting 53 what were the others doing? Don't blame the coach. Drop the failures. That's how they play the game in places like Australia, England etc.

You and selectors shall take responsibility. What is the justification for continuing with Dimuth despite not making runs recently. The opener must be a inform batter, his early exit affects the entire batting line up. He should have been dropped at end of the SA tour. How long are you going to stick with Matthew. He is not delivering and shutting the door on next generation. Drop both for the 2nd test and give opportunities to those waiting in wings.

We prepared a spin friendly pitch so that we can win. End result was a good lesson. Prabath jayasuriya plays well on spin friendly piches. He and other spinners were given a good thrashing.

The worst loss in Sri Lanka’s test history. It’s like a Gu-Du team playing cricket. I am sure a school cricket 11 would have played better.was this team selected by Namal baby by a selection panel run by some politicians dominated by the Rajapaksha clang.

Dimuth (36.80) failed in recent tests. Mathews played a reckless stroke across the line of the ball which was on the stumps against SA, last time. What about T20 Nissanka? He too failed against NZ and SA unlike Dimuth and Mathews. In SA, Nissanka had seven innings as he had three lives and he was dropped on 22 when he scored 89.Lahiru Udara (48.14) is better than Oshada Fernando (35.85) on their last 1 year FC batting average. Maththews should be replaced with Sonal Dinusha on current form. Sonal Dinusha (224.00) Within brackets are the FG batting averages in their last year. Wanuja Ashan for Nishan? SLC should start 3 test series as before that pandemic if they have a desire to develop proper cricket as England do and offered a 3 test series to us. That final test paved the way to a SL victory. SL victory matters more than the individual record of 100 tests of Dimuth though he was the best opener in the world. SLC is responsible for preventing that record by not playing 3 test serie

NPP will revive Sri Lanka cricket very soon Sunday, 02 February 2025 01:20 PM
The SLC, head coach, selection committee, and players must accept responsibility for this continuous debacle. One former and current player said very recently that they were very "disappointed" with the number of test matches allocated for Sri Lanka this year. Actually, we would have been "thrilled" if no test matches were allocated for Sri Lanka this year as our nation faces humiliating defeats one after another on our soli. Additionally, what is the stance of the new NPP minister of sports on this entire saga? Please come out and say how you will revive Sri Lanka men's cricket instead of saying, "we have plans", "we will do the nnedful", etc. Now, you are in the government, not the opposition, organising strikes and other disruptive activities.

A Silly Point Sunday, 02 February 2025 01:34 PM
Dear Sanath ; It is not mainly the fault of the cricketers. Main culprits are SLC administrators. Until recently, Sri Lanka had 26 First Class Teams. Way too much for a country having only about 6 school teams playing decent cricket. The high number of First Class Teams are there to vote for perennial administrators who are planning to have their jobs till they die. Australia with over 100 schools playing good cricket and a country bigger than the moon has only 6 First Class Teams. Australia also has a World Class Cricket Academy. Until these corrupt and clueless administrators are thrown out, and the number of First Class Teams is brought down to 6 or 8 and high quality Cricket Academy is set up, Sri Lankan Cricket cannot be improved.

We must ask for relegation to Tier 2 or Tier3 not wait for 2027. The entire coaching staff should be contracted for at least another 10 years and be paid more than their current salaries. The Board President and his team should be in the same position until they are called to rest. These guys have put us in the map for the wrong reasons. Franchise cricket bringing ageing players for paid holidays continue to develop young players and our seniors to play test cricket with T20 approach. Go Lanka Go

Government has more things to focus on than cricket Sunday, 02 February 2025 02:25 PM
Whether the team wins or not the income from cricket is always the same. Instead of wasting time on a sport, there are much better things to uplift the country. Cricket is a lost cause for Lanka, and with new ways and techniques only available to the already successful countries Sri Lanka cannot ever expect long term success. Give up and accept 2nd tier and respect most batsman bar Mathews and all bowlers did the best against the World's number one team, while the coach was abysmal failure.

First, I have same name as the coach but not related to him or the able bowler. However, I am shamed the coach Jayasuriya talk. Like a typical, loud MP, of the SLFP, UNP, SLPP, or SJB. Blame everyone else when the main guide for the coach is main failure. Previous coach never blamed players like this scumbag. He was sacked for racist/nationalistic reasons. This now, coach, but ex-MP has be ridden from his role.

Plenty of coaches for the massive salary, but not many able players Sunday, 02 February 2025 02:33 PM
There are some players who are long on the tooth, like Mathews. Jayasuriya is one who speak for useless Mathews to be in the team. And where do you expect to find all new team, but finding 20 coaches for the salary will be easy. Easy fixes is to get rid of the worst player, Mathews, and the coach.

I'm not sure how to explain this. Without been ignorant solve the problem that's in front of your face. We probably have the most pathetic selection committee. Why do you keep selecting people that have not performed over and over again. It's time Dimuth and Angelo are dropped, and new young talent is introduced.

Marnus nearly dropped when he continued poorformed and later he adjusted. Very fast aussie players vigorously claimed he must be dropped. But our two Dimuth Anjilo continued failed ,no our senior players any words about their dismal performance .Even Rohit current poor performance negatively affect his future captaincy.

High time that the Head Coach resigns and gives a person who can mentor and always choose the winning team like a game of chess instead of blaming the team players. Some of the players are misfits but you still go along with them instead of replacing them with young blood. No one of the players should be guaranteed of a place and be passengers where they have failed on the last two occasions. All these team players should be told in no uncertain terms they should earn their places even giving way to the new comers instead of being picked for performances of the past with grey areas. Sanath please time to say goodbye !!!!!!

Galle stadium is an utter waste of land in a tourist hub. Look at the map and see. It is a tourists city and this useless ground stands in the middle of the city. Funny thing is this ground is used only for test matches and any leather ball day matches. Government should scrap this ground and use that space for tourism purpose.

Instead of wasting money on tours we should have had a Zoom meeting with the Australian cricket team and asked them what records they wanted to break. Then agree to all that and enter it in the record books so that the Sri Lankan public does not need to watch a bunch of losers like this SL cricket team.

Sri Lanka's un sportsman like attitude of doctoring wickets and not providing suitable practice pitches to visiring teams has eventually backfired when the aussies came well prepared for the test series already having had net sessions in similar conditions in Dubai on their way to Sri Lanka. They completely dominated the game and out played Sri Lanka in every department of the match and Sri Lanka had no answer. Sri Lannka has a very poor record against Australia. Out of the 34 test matches played between the two countries since 1982 Australia has won 21 times both at home and away while Sri Lanka has only won 5 test matches only at home with 8 drawn

You had weeks to prepare in the venue itself. Aussies took this tour very seriously even after qualifying for WTC. They didn't accept our practice match but spent time in Dubai preparing, that's how they prepared even after thrashing india. Aussies had plans, moved Travis to open, changed team composition of team, Aussies spinners are better, and batters play spin better than SL as well. The SL captain is not serious enough and should be replaced. 4 bowlers had to bowl 150 plus overs, and they need batting all-rounders to supplement front-line bowlers. Openers pathetic. Prepare for the next match and select a proper side who will not only show up but compete.

Spinners were bowling the second over of each innings. Therefore the pitch wouldn't last for more than 18 hours of play. Game of cricket includes fast bowlers; but can not be at Galle. All test matches are played at Galle. Why? Poor winning mentality by SLC. It is cheating. Spread the test cricket to other venues in Sri Lanka. Then blame the batters if they do not perform..

Once in a way you loose you win , the team win before, lost before , so what. We have seen such irresponsible batting by Sanath Jayasuriya too when he was playing. If the otherside bowls we'll on a particular day the batting side would find it difficult. So accept the defeat and try correcting mistakes, go to the next game , Head Coach is a a leader and a leader should motivate the team instead of blame. Public criticism of the team will not help.

Coach Jayasuriya is disgrace to nation and blaming players to keep his job Sunday, 02 February 2025 08:50 PM
Jayasuriya is insecure because he is not a real coach, and not even capable at coaching. Maybe he is better at being a politician like head been when Mahinda ran past government. He is just attacking players and demoralising everyone, just to keep his job. Cut his pay drastically, and he will leave, and we will be better off.

I knew appointing SJ as head coach was a big mistake. Just because he had a stellar career in playing cricket does not mean he is suitable or capable of coaching the national team. Australia just finished playing a test series with India in Australia. The performance of both teams was so good each test was an absolute thriller to watch. However, in the last test match played in Galle, when Australia reached 600 declared, the game was all but over. Watch and see the same abysmal performance in the next test!

There is big difference coaching a International team you have to be qualified Professional coach with international experience no offence with Sanath / Maliga they were star cricketers by they have no knowledge how to coach international team at least should have level 5 experience - Sanath on his press conference keep talking crap he has no punch to be coach each time we lose a game we will end up to be rank 50 hope something needs to be done ASAP

Test cricket is a different game. Choose players who have the ability to play the ball accordingly and stay long hours at the crease. They are paid to play. Rash strokes are completely unacceptable. Play like true professionals and don't disgrace the country that has produced many great cricketers. This game needs planning well ahead and the ability to think on the field depending on the need of the hour. Preparing a pitch to favour the home side has completely backfired. New faces will definitely make a difference as the opposition have studied old hands and their way of thinking. Please perform better at the next game, otherwise teams will keep coming in the hope of breaking records.

The selectors and the coach need to end their favoritism towards Dimuth and Angelo allowing them to reach career milestones and accumulate personal wealth, all the while continuing to underperform. Drastic changes need to be done to the team for the 2nd Test including reviewing the leadership of Dhananjaya who like the other 2 seniors have taken their places in the team for granted. There are enough talented batsmen in the SL A Team who have performed overseas who could replace the seniors such as Sonal Dinusha, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Pavan Rathnayake , Ahan Wickramasinghe to name a few.

Though Sanath Jayasuriya has an excellent record as Sri Lanka cricket coach on the dodgy pitches in Sri Lanka especially in Galle his performance as cricket coach overseas to say the least has been disastrous. Losing every crcket series to England New Zealand and South Africa which goes to prove he is just an ordinary cricket coach without any credentials to prove himself.
