JVP, FLSP in verbal clash over Yakkala office dispute

Colombo, Sept. 3 (Daily Mirror) - A heated dispute has erupted between the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Front Line Socialist Party (FLSP) over the alleged takeover of a party office in Yakkala, with both parties offering conflicting claims regarding ownership and political intent.

Responding to accusations from the FLSP that the JVP had forcefully seized the office, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe asserted today that the land in question was legally purchased by the JVP in 2005.

"We have documents to prove that the land legally belongs to us," Jayasinghe stated in a post on his official Facebook page, suggesting the matter is primarily a legal land dispute rather than a politically motivated act.

He further clarified that he was not among the group of JVP members who had reportedly visited the Yakkala premises on Tuesday.

However, FLSP Education Affairs Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda rejected that framing, saying the incident cannot be dismissed as a mere property disagreement.

"This is not just a land issue. It must be seen as a matter of national concern," Jayagoda said.

"The government is clearly resorting to violent suppression, reminiscent of the era of President J.R. Jayewardene. This event signals how the authorities intend to handle dissent in the future."

Jayagoda also warned that the JVP may attempt to take control of other FLSP properties using similar tactics.

The FLSP claimed that around 100 government supporters had forcefully entered the Yakkala office on Tuesday, evicted party members, and retained control of the premises, including computers, books and other materials.
