Grama Niladharis/Sevakas or the Village Officers can now deputize the functions of Justice of Peace, according to an Extraordinary Gazette Notification.

“Every administrative Grama Niladhari of every Divisional Secretariat division who is in permanent and active service shall be an ex-officio Justice of the Peace for the Republic of Sri Lanka,” the notice read.

The regulations were made by the Constitutional Reforms Minister under Section 61 read with Section 45(1a) of the Judicature Act, No. 2 of 1978. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

The JP role has just been diluted further yet again. JP titles have already been made a joke. This move takes it to get another low.

The role of a grama niladhari is of not much value. Most of the issues in distribution of benefit schemes for the needy arises from the GS. They will give letters because of friendship or simply to anyone who’s name appears on the voters list.

There are about 65 GS in Hambantota, appointed by former President Mahinda Rajapakshe whom cannot even read or write English and Sinhala. How will they manage if they are forced to be GS?.
