JCPSM ends strike, but lab technicians to continue

Colombo, June 7 (Daily Mirror) - The Joint Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) has decided to call off its ongoing islandwide strike in hospitals following a lengthy discussion held yesterday, JCPSM General Secretary Chanaka Dharmawickrama said.

However, medical laboratory technicians have opted to continue their strike action.

According to Dharmawickrama, the continued strike by laboratory technicians will begin at 8:00 a.m. on June 5, with support from five professions under the Supplementary Medical Service, including medical laboratory services, pharmacy sectors and others.

The strike was launched over several unresolved demands, primarily concerning issues related to promotions. The work stoppage has significantly disrupted services in many hospitals, severely affecting patients.

Despite the ongoing action by lab technicians, certain institutions will remain unaffected. These include the Cancer Hospital, Maternity and Children’s Hospitals, Kidney Hospitals and the Central Blood Bank (CBB), which will continue to operate normally.
