Colombo, May 8 (Daily Mirror) - The suspect who died recently while in remand prison has had issues with fellow inmates, Minister of Justice Harshana Nanayakkara told Parliament today.

This person who was remanded for contempt of court after his phone rang inside the court room has had issues with fellow inmates, Minister Nanayakkara said in response to a question raised by MP Chitral Fernando.

The Minister said he is currently continuing discussions with the Judicial Service Commission and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka on the contempt of court issue.

Also, he said investigations are being conducted to determine the cause of the suspect's death.

Judge should take responsibility too right. If the judge did not make a harsh decision, the guy would be still living. Also the parliament should update laws by changing all these outdated laws. Issue a warning or fine for such situations and use sending someone to remand as last resort.

please don't put to prison with dangerous inmates for these kind of petty issues . A word of warning or atleast ask him to go out of the court room would have saved an innocent life.

In the first place, he would be alive had he not been thrown into prison for a genuine error of not silencing his phone. Everyone involved should not be allowed to get off the hook by blaming other inmates.

does the judge feel anything for what happened ?? i can understand a punishment such as a fine or a suspended social service work, but 14days in remand...is a disgusting abuse of power...

How interesting it will be to send the so called judge to the same prison and see the fun, in places of worship even signs are there still people forget to switch off the phone, could have warned the person.

Not placing a phone on silent mode is accidental and not intentional. In crime intention is a very vital ingradiant to prove. It would have been good if the Judge granted him bail pending the contempt charges and their hearing. This reminds me of a senior lawyer whose phone rang inside the court room in the Southern Province and the presiding judge framing charges. I never heard the end result of that case. Was the case withdrawn?
