The recent crash of an Air India Boeing 787 in Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of more than 240 people, has brought global attention to aviation safety and Boeing’s troubled record.

This tragic accident, India’s deadliest air disaster in over ten years, has led to urgent inspections of Boeing aircraft around the world. Aviation regulators from the U.S, U.K, and other countries have joined the investigation, as concerns grow over possible mechanical problems and gaps in safety oversight.

With the heavy competition and financial constraints many airlines face, it is testimony to design excellence that we don't have many more crashes. Many budget airlines fly their aircraft non-stop with quick turnarounds between alleged routine maintenance with little scrutiny. However, airport congestion during take-off and landings remains of far greater concern.

Airline travel is much safer than travel by road or by train in Sri Lanka and in many other countries. Everyday, thousands die all over the world on the roads and rails. But comparatively , for an entire year , less than 1000 die from air travel accidents. That way airtravel is 99% safer than the road travel.
