Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei unconscious and in a ‘severe condition’, leaked memo suggests

sky news - Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newest Supreme Leader following the assassination of his father, is in a “severe condition” and cannot take part in the regime’s decision-making, according to a leaked diplomatic memo.

The memo, which is understood to be based on United States and Israeli intelligence and has been seen by The Times, suggests Khamenei is unconscious.

It also reportedly says the Supreme Leader is receiving treatment in Qom – an Iranian city considered holy by Shi’a Muslims.

“Mojtaba Khamenei is being treated in Qom in a severe condition, unable to be involved in any decision-making by the regime,” the memo reportedly reads, suggesting Mojtaba is currently not able to run Iran.

Mojtaba replaced his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed when Israel and the US launched their war on Iran more than a month ago.

However, Mojtaba has not been seen in public since taking over the regime on March 8.

The US has said it believes Mojtaba himself is wounded and likely disfigured.

According to The Times, the memo said his father’s body is being prepared to be buried in Qom.

Intelligence agencies also identified “laying the groundworks needed to build a large mausoleum in Qom” being prepared for “more than one grave”, the memo reportedly stated.

Meanwhile, RTVI news outlet quoted Russia's ambassador to Iran last week saying that Khamenei was in the country but was refraining from making public appearances "for understandable reasons".

Russia has close ties with Iran, with which it signed a strategic partnership treaty last year.

A recent video widely shared on social media that claimed to show Mojtaba walking into an Iranian war room has been flagged by X contributors as being AI generated.

US President Donald Trump has previously said Iran's leadership was now “totally different people” following the elder Khamenei’s death.

“I didn't need regime change, but we got it because of the casualties of war. We got it. So we have regime change and the big thing we have is they're not going to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told Reuters last week, adding: “Nor do they want one.”

Meanwhile on Tuesday morning, President Trump called out Australia over its support of US efforts during the Iran conflict.

The President outlined his grievances towards NATO at a White House press conference, claiming the political and military alliance had “gone out of their way not to help” the US during the war.

“And it’s not just NATO. You know who else didn’t help us? South Korea didn’t help us,” President Trump told reporters on Monday, local time.

“You know who else didn’t help us? Australia didn’t help us.”

President Trump also said he will order sweeping attacks on Iranian civilian power plants and bridges unless Tehran makes a deal aimed at ending the five-week war with Iran.

“The entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night,” he said.

"I hope I don't have to do it."
