The Iranian warship that sank off Sri Lanka’s southern coast had been attacked by a foreign submarine while it was outside Sri Lankan waters, defense sources confirmed to Daily Mirror.
The frigate IRIS Dena, carrying around 180 crew members, went down about 25 miles south of Sri Lanka after issuing a distress call at dawn, Sri Lankan authorities said.
At least 101 sailors are reported missing, while 78 others were injured in the incident.
During a session in Parliament, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vajitha Herath confirmed that injured crew members rescued from the vessel had been admitted to a hospital in southern Sri Lanka.
An opposition legislator questioned whether the ship had been targeted as part of the ongoing military tensions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, raising the possibility that the vessel had been attacked.
Unconfirmed reports circulating in diplomatic and maritime circles suggested that the ship may have been struck by a foreign submarine, though Sri Lankan authorities have not officially confirmed the claim.
Sri Lanka Navy spokesman Buddhika Sampath said the country had launched a rescue mission in line with international maritime obligations.
Two Sri Lankan Navy ships and an aircraft have been deployed to the area to assist in search and rescue efforts, while 32 Iranian sailors were transported to the main hospital in Galle for treatment.
