Colombo, May 28 (Daily Mirror) - An investigation has been launched into the non-reporting of around 20 train drivers, Railways General Manager (GMR) Dhammika Jayasundara said.

Speaking to the he said that several scheduled train services had to be cancelled in recent days as a result of these drivers failing to report for duty.

“The department needs approximately 430 drivers to run daily operations smoothly. However, at present, we only have about 275 drivers available,” he said.

In light of the shortage, the Railways Department has called for applications to recruit new train drivers. Mr. Jayasundara added that arrangements are being made to conduct a competitive recruitment examination this July to fill the vacancies.

He further said that disciplinary action would be taken against those found guilty of deliberately neglecting their duties, disrupting public transport services.

The explanation should be called from each driver If the RGM is not satisfied with the the explanation so called. The duty neglected drivers should be served with the vacation of post notice. When the drivers are idle at home without the overtime and the batta for months and years they will themselves will learn a lesson not to be engaged in unwanted trade union actions and the strikes.

Those absent locomotive drivers are guilty; no doubt. GM, please be mindful those drivers have caused inconvenience to commuters. In addition tax payers money has also been wasted as well. So, they are guilty by long way. Punishment is the only way, which shall be in accordance with railways regulations.. Looking at the recent operations of Railway, Privatization is the only way.

I think you guys need to take things seriously n not dance according to their tune.. send all 20 of the home permanently and suspend those who try to protest and try to prevent tacking actions. Come on tax payers pay the fellows and the get punished. Whether politics involved or otherwise .. find the guts and take action. You try doing it in one department and all government employees will fall in place

"SICK NOTES" should be banned and Govt medical certificate considered valid. Also strikers of short notice disrupting public service and causing hardships to the general public should not be paid their strike day wages and other privileges under their salary structure. Even a sick note should be consideed a strike . Luckily these specimens are not fir for any kind of sport, .
