The international driving licence issuing counter at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) prevents a large scale scam where certain persons who claim to be brokers charge around USD 100 from foreigners for mediatiing to obtain international driving licences, Minister Bimal Ratnayake told Parliament today.

Justifying the decision to open the counter at BIA further, the Minister said the counter at the airport is more convenient to foreigners."

Foreigner have to spend one whole day at the Registry of Motor Vehicles Office (RMV) office in Piliyandala to obtain the licence.

The RMV is a one of the largest bribery institutes of this country. Almost 99% of the staff are bribe takers. In this kind of an environment, the government needs to begin cleaning places like this with severe punishments and sentences by trapping these takers. We the citizens also need to support the government in this endeavor and report confidentially the persons involved. This is the true Sri Lankan spirit to clean this country.

It is we who encourage this scam. Go to a Govt office there is a person standing at the entrance we tell him what we need and he will offer to get things done quickly and we agree to pay the required amount and the job is done. This is the usual practice for years now in Govto ffices. Catch the giver / the offerer and that office boy to stop this.

Brilliant make things convenient for both foreigners and locals since it’s a big waste of time to go to RMV to get a job done . even foreign lice conversion also made easy for citizens in theire own instead of going to RMV Colombo and waste a day or two

Next fix the bribe culture at National ID issuing department. A diaspora, dual national reported of asking of Rs 30,000 for one hour service and when he ignore that, he was delayed for two weeks.

I am a Srilankan who is working in UAE. I don't have a license from Sri Lanka but I have a license from UAE. I bring the International Driving License (from UAE) when I come to Sri Lanka and get that attested by Automoile Association (AA) paying 8000 . I have been doing this for years now. I guess, from now on, I will not have to waste my time and money at AA. Is my guess correct? Could anyone provide some light on this question?
