Instagram parental supervision app launched in Sri Lanka

The Instagram Parental Supervision App, designed to help parents monitor and guide the online activity of children aged 13 to 16, was officially launched in Sri Lanka today, Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne said.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Deputy Minister Weeraratne said discussions had been held with tech giant Meta ahead of the launch, focusing on critical areas such as youth safety, data protection, and regulatory alignment.

"This is a key step toward creating a safer digital environment for our youth," he stated, highlighting that the app will enable parents to supervise and support their children's social media usage responsibly.

The minister also revealed that Meta has expressed support for Sri Lanka's upcoming data protection framework, reinforcing the company’s commitment to user safety and compliance.

Additionally, Weeraratne noted Meta’s global investment of USD 75 billion in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Meta AI, the company’s flagship AI product, is currently serving over one million users worldwide at no cost.

The Instagram Parental Supervision App, already available in 14 other countries, is now officially introduced in Sri Lanka as part of the government’s broader efforts to promote a safer and more digitally responsible society.
