Colombo, July 21 (Daily Mirror) - Injuries have emerged as the leading cause of hospitalizations in Sri Lanka, with over one million people admitted to state hospitals each year due to injury-related incidents, the Health Ministry revealed in a communiqué issued recently.
According to the Ministry, around 12,000 people mainly from the economically productive age group lose their lives annually due to injuries, while many more suffer permanent disabilities.
Health experts expressed that almost all injuries are preventable if timely safety measures and corrective actions are taken. They emphasized that post-event care, particularly basic first aid, plays a critical role in reducing fatalities and complications.
The Ministry further said that media professionals have a vital role to play in injury prevention by raising awareness of the root causes of accidents and promoting first aid education, especially in high-risk workplaces. Such efforts are essential in building a safer and healthier society, they said.
