Colombo, May 22 (Daily Mirror) - A female elephant, believed to be around 25 years old, was found badly injured at the Siwalagama Forest Reservation, prompting an urgent response from wildlife and veterinary officers in the area.
Acting on received information, officers from the Thirappane and Pandulagama veterinary offices in Anuradhapura rushed to the location yesterday to provide medical assistance. According to wildlife officers, the elephant was struggling to walk due to a severe injury on its back left leg.
Veterinary doctors attending to the elephant reported that multiple gunshot wounds were visible on the animal's body, suggesting it had been shot at several times.
However, treating the injured elephant proved to be a challenge as her calf refused to leave her side, displaying signs of distress.
In order to safely conduct the medical procedures, the veterinary team administered anesthesia to both the mother and the calf. Once sedated, the team proceeded with the necessary treatment to address the gunshot injuries.
Wildlife authorities said that further monitoring and care will be provided in the coming days to support the recovery of both animals.
An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for the shooting incident.
