Colombo, July 25 (Daily Mirror) - Initial steps are being taken to introduce a new Constitution, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today.

Responding to a question raised by MP Ajith P. Perera, she said a new Constitution will be introduced before the term of the present government ends.

Take your time government. No hurry, as this government knows how to work within the constitution. They have not even used their 2/3 majority to suppress the people, unlike in the past. After 5 years we can have a Government headed by a PM.

The announcement of "before" ending the NPP's term to wait for the constitutional changes is a wrong idea. It is appropriate to enact it before the end of this year, 2025, that's the changes the people want right now, and eagerly expecting to see that very change in an immediate manner. Act fast.

Yes a new Constitution needs a proper framework so that ad hoc amendments to suit those in power cannot be made. All interested parties including minorities must be consulted to arrive at a consensus and that takes time. When nothing to complain Ajith Perera tries to find some fault as if this matter can be just brought about.

Better to say it is too big for talkers like yourself always criticising only. The Constitution of Sri Lanka has been amended 21 times since it was originally enacted on September 7, 1978. These amendments reflect the ongoing process of adapting the constitution to meet the evolving needs of our society and governance and that is not messing with the constitution but progress to suit current needs and aspirations.

Abolition of presidency has to be done in a way that it will not lead to separation. If provincial councils wouldn't be under governers who will be gone with presidency is no more, it could lead to separation.
