March 11 (Daily Mirror) - In a landmark first for India, the Supreme Court has permitted the withdrawal of artificial life support for a 32-year-old man who has been in a coma for more than 12 years.
The order was delivered on Wednesday (March 11) by a bench comprising Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. V. Viswanathan, marking the court’s first instance of allowing passive euthanasia in such a case.
While delivering the ruling, the bench also urged the Union Government to consider introducing comprehensive legislation governing passive euthanasia. The court further directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to ensure that the withdrawal of life support is carried out under a carefully designed plan that preserves the patient’s dignity.
Passive euthanasia refers to allowing a patient to die by withholding or withdrawing medical treatment or life support that is necessary to keep them alive.
