India, April 27 (ET) - The central government has allowed the export of 99,150 MT onion to six countries, Bangladesh, UAE, Bhutan, Bahrain, Mauritius and Sri Lanka.

According to a press release, the decision comes against the backdrop of lower estimated Kharif and Rabi crops in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, coupled with increased demand in the international market.

To facilitate the export, the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) has been designated as the agency responsible for exporting onions to these countries.

Additionally, the government has permitted the export of 2000 MT of white onion, specifically cultivated for export markets in the Middle East and some European countries.

The production cost of white onions is higher due to factors such as higher seed costs, adoption of good agricultural practices, and compliance with strict maximum residue limits requirements.

In order to ensure domestic stability, the government has set a procurement target of 5 lakh tons of onions under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF) for the Rabi-2024 season.

Central agencies such as the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are collaborating with local agencies to support procurement, storage, and farmer registration.

To minimize storage losses, the Department of Consumer Affairs has decided to enhance the quantum of onions to be irradiated and cold stored from 1200 MT last year to over 5000 MT this year.

Technical support from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, has been sought for this purpose. Last year's pilot of onion irradiation and cold storage resulted in storage losses of less than 10 percent.

A high-level team comprising officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs, NCCF, and NAFED visited Nashik and Ahmednagar Districts of Maharashtra in mid-April to raise awareness among farmers and local agencies about the procurement of onions for the PSF buffer.

Retail Indian price of kilo of Bombay Onions in India is Rs.24.00 per kilo. Why is it over 10 times the price here in Sri Lanka? Forget about the quality of it.

Don't you know our officials right from the top rob on every commodity that is imported. Garlic, Sugar Eggs, Medicines, Onions, Potatoes , Coal, Petrol you name it. Most corrupt place.

It is because Businessmen are running the country and they have a monopoly in the commodity trade. These businessmen have to oil the palm of several politicians AND officials. All these costs are added when the onion reaches the market. This bloated amount is finally palmed over to you and me. Remember, trader is not doing a social service.

Could it be that corruption is 10 times higher here and the devaluation of the rupee a contributory factor. And why can't we grow our own onions when the land is so fertile

Its not a good news as far as self sufficient is concern. We as farmers, officials and policy makers are failed to capitalize this golden opportunity! Shame

Better quality to Europe and Middle East Sunday, 28 April 2024 12:23 PM

Better quality onion gets sent to Middle East and Europe. Those with more harmful residue get sent to poorer nations.

Human Being Sunday, 28 April 2024 12:26 PM

Why can't we cultivate onions in our home land? because of commission and bribe, this crooks will never let our farmers live :(

Madness to expect both self sufficiency and then also prices affordable to public Sunday, 28 April 2024 06:55 PM

Can't grow wheat for bread, and can't grow red lentil for pariupu/dahl either. No one complains about that. Growing big onions here would make the prices too expensive. Egg prices only drop when imports happen. There will be starvation and suffering with the madness of self-sufficiency. Also utter foolishness to imagine this country can do much anything except services for the global market. Singapore thrives on high quality services for the world, but culture there is more modern that backward 2500 attitudes here. So, give up an migrate rather than throw good time and money to improve a religion filled culture here, and focus on self-salvation and material well being instead of having life and time sucked out by adhering to the local deadbeat culture. Best that will happen is when in the next 50 years military from overseas come and take over and get rid of all the 2500 culture which has been like cancer on life of public for last 50 years.

High time we start cultivating big onions in our country. Our lazy lifestyle and expecting everything free of charge are also a contributing factors for our down turn. With AIR CONDITION LIVING politicos, we cannot develop the country.

Simple solution. Grow your own onions. It's simple and easy in our climate. BTW, why do we use so much onions? Learn the art of not putting all our vegetables in one basket. We have not learned to be versatile and we are stuck in our ways when it comes to cooking. Maybe, the men should try their pot luck. My wife handed the cooking reigns to me and now the family enjoys international cuisine.
