Colombo, April 15 (Daily Mirror) - The government of India has lifted the export restrictions on onions to Sri Lanka, with export of up to 10,000 MT of onions permitted vide the enclosed notification of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
The Indian High Commission said the exemption for Sri Lanka reiterated India’s Neighbourhood First policy, adding to the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festivities.

It is all imports. When producers (farmers) are shortchanged as happened in corrupt countries like Sri Lanka, it is not only farmers suffer of poverty but the whole country because farmers cannot invest in maintaining/improving the productivity of land leading progressively deceasing harvest

What a wonderful neighbor we have in the north. Why not tell the truth that we have become a nagging neighbor, always cringing for aid? This is one way of keeping us indebted mentally. What is the use of minister if he cannot look into the need of our famers who do so much to supply the nation?

The more we import crops we can grow here, less chance of reaching self sufficiency, as we get used to it. Dependency on imports is bound to cripple the nation in times of crisis, agricultural and socio political. Nothing can be better than producing our own, painstaking, long and arduous they may be.

Imports should only be done to bridge the gap until you can establish your own harvest to meet the demand for your consumption. Imports should never replace your self-sustenance. In the long run, dependence on other countries to supply your food needs is detrimental. When the supply chain is disrupted again like during the pandemic, Sri Lankans will suffer immensely with food shortages. So start sowing now and reap your harvest in time.
