Colombo, March 6 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today proposed that health and healthcare facilities be included in the Constitution as a fundamental right just as civic and political rights.

Speaking during the committee stage debate of the Health Ministry, he told Parliament that the Constitution has a narrow definition of human rights which states only civic and political rights.

He said it is time for Sri Lanka to include health and healthcare facilities as fundamental rights in the Constitution and added that the Opposition will support the government in such a move.

"It can be done through an amendment to the Constitution or include it in the new Constitution promised by the government. We will give our fullest support fir that," he said.

Premadasa said it is also important to give a broader definition of human rights, covering all sectors such as economic, social, religious, cultural, health and education.
