In-depth understanding of world politics needed to deal with fallout of U.S. tariffs: Wajira

Colombo, April 7 (Daily Mirror) - An in-depth understanding of world politics is needed to deal with the fallout of the U.S. tariffs on Sri Lanka, UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said.

It will be tragic for the country unless the ruling party has such an understanding, he said at a meeting in Trincomalee.

He said the country went through its worst ever economic crisis two years back, and Ranil Wickremesinghe overcame it and restored normalcy.

“Today, the U.S. has slapped tariffs on Sri Lankan exports. Only a few countries in the world have been subjected to such high tariffs. Ranil Wickremesinghe is studying it at the moment. He made a statement on it a few days back,” he said.

He said it should have been the duty of the government to study the unfolding circumstances of world politics during the past six month.

“This is the area where you need expertise in world political affairs. That is why he referred to the importance of visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka,” the UNP Chairman said.

He added that India, as the closest neighour, provided much-needed assistance including the USD 2 billion credit line to Sri Lanka at the time of need.
