Colombo, June 19 (Daily Mirror) - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says there is an urgent need to reduce the food waste and improve food security in Sri Lanka.
She made this statement while speaking at a policy meeting organised by the World Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka, with help from the Gates Foundation and other international partners.
At the event, the Prime Minister spoke about three important lessons for the country’s food security — working together, using new ideas and making sure no one is left out.
She also said it is important to use modern technology, support agricultural trade and involve women and young people in improving the country’s food systems.
The two-day meeting hopes to encourage action to reduce food waste, improve healthy eating and use natural resources in a better and more sustainable way.
“There are three important lessons we must remember: working together, using new ideas and making sure no one is left behind,” Dr. Amarasuriya said.
She added that technology and teamwork are very important to create a fair and strong food system.
Many important people from South Asian countries attended the event, including Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabandi, World Bank Division Director for Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka David Sislen, Gates Foundation Director Archna Vyas and Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, the Secretary General of BIMSTEC, as well as members from civil society and the business community.
