Import restrictions on nearly 300 items lifted

An extraordinary gazette notification has been issued lifting the import restrictions imposed on 286 items including tiles, bathroom items, sanitary ware and food items.

The gazette notification was issued by President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies.

99% of these items can be made locally. why waste hard earn USD you receive from poor workers aboard to buy tiles and bidets? there are plenty of local companies making these.

We still don't get it.... as a country as a nation we are still importing heep load of stuff to satisfy some businessman .... we are living off loans ... debts are not paid... what the current administration along with central bank is doing is just postponing the inevitable..... we owe well over usd 7 billion as immediate debt once restructured within the next 5 years to be paid... where can we grow???? Local products are not all encouraged.... but we keep importing even toilet paper!!!!

Ranil's strategy is to get loans and allow importation of all luxury items for his colombo elites and his business friends . When you import these junk , you can never develop the local products. You should know that Ranil's yahapalana government borrowed USD 16 billion during 5 year period and just ate it. Gota's mistake was using the our own foreign exchange to pay back those loans instead of using it fir essential items.

There should be a 100% tax on imported goods that are readily available in the local market.

These decisions should be made by a committee rather than one person after doing a market research to see if the product is available in the local market or not in sufficient quantities to meet the demand. Then only exceptions should be made to import the goods.
