Colombo, May 13 (Daily Mirror) - A delay in implementing the Cabinet’s decision to import salt has led to the current nationwide shortage, the Sri Lanka Salt Producers Association alleged yesterday.“Cabinet approved a proposal to import 30,000 metric tonnes on March 26 this year. However, the stocks have yet to arrive in Sri Lanka to date.
The shortage that is prevailing at the moment will end as and when this consignment arrives in Sri Lanka,” Sri Lanka Salt Producers Association President Ganaka Amarasinghe told the media. He said the imported stock was expected to arrive by the end of April this year. Another reason cited was a decline in local production due to the prevailing dry weather in the country. It was reported that stocks of imported salt are expected to reach the market in the coming days. Meanwhile, Director of Information at the Consumer Affairs Authority, Asela Bandara, told the media that legal action would be taken against traders selling salt at exorbitant prices. He confirmed that a number of complaints have been received from the public regarding the unavailability of salt and high prices. It was said that one kilogram of salt is currently selling for more than Rs. 400 in the market.
