Immigration official arrested for soliciting Rs. half-million bribe



Colombo, Jan 21 (Daily Mirror) - An immigration officer from the Department of Immigration and Emigration has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 500,000 to secure the release of an individual detained over a visa violation.

The Bribery Commission said that the suspect, an authorised officer attached to the Sri Lanka Immigration Detention Camp in Welisara, was arrested following a complaint from a resident of the Jaffna area.

According to the complaint, the individual had been detained for staying in Sri Lanka without a visa. 

The officer had reportedly demanded the bribe in exchange for arranging the person's release from the Welisara Detention Camp.

Bribery Commission officers arrested the suspect at the detention facility, and he is to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court.
