Immigration nabs three Bangladeshi nationals with fake Sri Lankan passports at BIA

Colombo, July 28 (Daily Mirror) - Three Bangladeshi nationals bound for Tehran, Iran were arrested by the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this evening for having forged Sri Lankan passports in their possession.

The immigration officials at the BIA, on suspicion searched the three foreigners who were to board Air Arabia flight G9509 bound for Sharjah at 3.10 pm today with genuine Bangladesh passports.

When searching the passengers the DIE Border Surveillance Unit (BSU) officials found three forged Sri Lankan passports in their baggage with fake local immigration seals.

A senior immigration official told the Daily Mirror the passengers had arrived in Sri Lanka in May on tourist visas and had tried to leave for the Middle East with their forged travel papers.

Upon inquiry the suspects had told the authorities that they were to depart the BIA with their Bangladesh passports and to enter Sharjah and then to Tehran with their forged Sri Lankan passports.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the passengers had received their forged travel documents from a local agent for a large sum of money.

The DIE officials handed over the foreigners to the Criminal Investigation Department unit at the BIA for further legal proceedings.
