“If you are Bruce Lee, I am Mike Tyson,” - Chamara Sampath challenges Lalkantha

Colombo, January 25 (Daily Mirror) - Former Minister and Member of Parliament Chamara Sampath Dassanayake issued a fiery challenge to Minister K.D. Lalkantha during a public gathering, declaring, “If you are Bruce Lee, I am Mike Tyson,” in response to remarks attributed to the Minister.

Addressing the gathering, Dassanayake responded to remarks reportedly made by Lalkantha concerning physical strength and confrontational politics. Referring to an alleged comparison by Lalkantha to martial arts icon Bruce Lee, Dassanayake said, “I have one thing to tell Lalkantha. If you are Bruce Lee, I am Mike Tyson. I will give you two punches and you will fall to the ground.”

During his speech, Dassanayake strongly criticised the conduct of the current administration, claiming that 159 NPP Members of Parliament remain silent while the public continue to face economic hardship. He accused them of acting like “stone statues” instead of addressing the people’s grievances.

The MP also disclosed that he is currently facing 14 court cases. He said indictments had been issued against him by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court recently, with further hearings scheduled at the High Court and the Badulla Magistrate’s Court. Despite the legal challenges, Dassanayake stated that he would continue to speak out on behalf of the public.

Touching on the use of language in Parliament, Dassanayake said many politicians claim fluency in English for political image-building, while he had been honest about his limitations. He added that although he was not fluent, he was capable of basic communication in English and Tamil when required.

He further remarked that the youth population aged between 18 and 30 had played a decisive role in political changes but were now among those most affected by the country’s economic difficulties.
