Colombo, July 7 (Daily Mirror) - An Inland Revenue Department (IRD) Deputy Commissioner has been arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a businessman.

According to the Bribery Commission, the official was caught while accepting the bribe at the IRD office on Jawatte Road in Colombo.

Investigations revealed that the IRD officer had demanded a bribe from a businessman in Piliyandala in order to issue a tax clearance report for his business located in Dematagoda.

It is reported that the officer had initially demanded Rs. 100,000, but the amount was later reduced to Rs. 50,000 after negotiations. The businessman had already paid an advance of Rs. 42,000 on July 3.

Bribery Commission officers apprehended the Deputy Commissioner today while he was accepting the balance Rs. 8,000 in cash.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.

This man now goes on a 10 year prison! Well done bribery commission officers. Recently another one went on a 20yr for Rs 1 lakh. Government officers should be frighten even for the word 'bribery' or 'corruption'.

Well Done Bribery Commision and NPP govt who gave the assurance of non interference. Moment govt cracks down really hard on the IRD, Customs, Excise bribe takers and finally Police dept bribe takers the revenues of the nation will significantly improve. Even though we blamed the 225 as rogues, the bigger volume of loss is created by these govt entities.

A warning to all government officials not to take bribes. You guys take bribes by being customer unfriendly, frighten customer by creating bottle necks in application processing. Otherwise, you are going to face arrests, remand, long court proceedings and legal expenses, family break ups, shattered children's future, social isolation and finally life in a jail.
