Parliament, May 14 (Daily Mirror)- Parliamentarian Chandima Weerakkody said yesterday he got to know that vehicle permits for Members of Parliament had been passed according to the request of the government.

He told Parliament that most people were expecting to import vehicles but the government claimed that vehicles could be imported next year.

"Most people are expecting to import vehicles. But, the government said vehicles can be imported only next year. However, I heard that MPs' permits have been passed following your request," he told the government MPs in Parliament.

Speaking during the debate, he said President Ranil Wickremesinghe claimed that the salaries of government employees would be increased next year and added that all these promises are given to hoodwink the people.

Bring the new vehicles imported with the new duty free permits to the electorates. We know what to do when the elections are announced. "THEY WILL BE ALL SENT HOME WITH THEIR VEHICLES"

Shame the opposition MP'S too have accepted so don't blame the Government.

Duty free luxury vehicles for MPs, massive salary increases for the staff of the Central Bank, increases in allowances for doctors, all these can be done immediately because the economy has now recovered unexpectedly and in leaps and bounds. However, increases in salaries for other public servants, purchase of essential drugs for patients in state hospitals, all these have to wait until next year, (if at all next year dawns), because the economy is yet to recover and the government is still extremely short of funds. Till then treat the agitators to liberal doses of water cannon and tear gas.

The problem in Sri Lanka is we the voters are supposed to be having the supreme franchise power! And yet we end up democratically electing 226 misfits who care more for themselves first before dishing out some crumbs for the rest of us. People deserve the government they get. When we get sick of maroon rogues we may vote for red murderers and expect a better system! The only way the candidates will get a crystal clear message is if a vast majority of the voters actually scrap the vote. Then they will realise we want a real change.

We people should have the courage to reject whoever allowing and accepting these permits.

Don’t Vote Those with New Vehicles and Incompetent Wednesday, 15 May 2024 05:17 AM

Who ever is getting new vehicles should not be voted again. Clearly shows they are more interested in themselves than the country and people.

If the govt do something, oppositions say it is for hoodwink the people. Then what do you expecting from the govt, and for what. Positive attitudes are important to take forward the country pl. Do not see everything by wearing election spectacles.

So I pay upwards of 30% of my salary as tax to allow these useless MPs to get duty free vehicles, while I continue to drive a 16 year old vehicle. Fantastic.

@Chandima Weerakkody- So what are you saying here? Are you making any sense? Or relieved and happy you got your pound of flesh?

Citizen Silva Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:07 AM

Please Chandima Weerakkody can you name the MPs who have been granted duty-free vehicle permits. They must be put to shame in the public eye for accepting duty-free permits when the country is in crisis.

    Boru Na.... Atha .... Atha ... Atha ..... (100% truth) Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:12 AM

Ranil is trying to pacify the MPs. offering Vehicle Permits and cheating the masses saying salary increase etc., This is like the rotten rice distributed to the school children and remote villages to purchase votes.

    Zacky Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:26 AM

Dear President, In some semi govt. sectors, employees are allowed vehicle loan amount Rs. 250,000. This value existing more than 6 years, is not sufficient to purchase a vehicle these days, since the prices has increased three fold. It would be thankful if you could increase the amount considering the price hike.

    Rojer Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:31 AM

Why the ordinary people don't have the "right to know" privileges of the parliament matters like the other countries (even India has)? Then we will know who voted for RW to become Prez, who voted for vehicles, salary increase etc.

    Rojer Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:33 AM

You will not be able to anything. The permit will be sold to dealers for fat profit

Leel Rajasooriya - Industrialist Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:34 AM

Chandima is a decent honest politician as I know him personally. He talks to the point or never talk nonsense, what he says are true, but he should include that Ranil is cheating saying this and that, nothing will happen as he himself is doubtful whether he could be in power next year.

    Ravana Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:38 AM

Because we voted for religion, race, hatred for others and greed we are now reaping what we sowed. We still have jackasses who confuse us by labelling the patriots and praising the traitors. We will fall further and carry a heavier debt burden.

    Prof. K.M. Coomarasamy Tuesday, 14 May 2024 10:38 AM

Providing Duty Free Vehicle permits to MPs. is a curse. They know pretty well that next General Election they are no more (95% Potuwa Mps). Without MR they could not earn side part commissions on projects, and they are dried up. Ranil will never allow such dirty men to prosper, he will play his dirty games to irradiate them.

    Kandeeban B Tuesday, 14 May 2024 11:06 AM

If this is the case it is the present finance minister is now responsible and answerable. When reserves are low as USD5Bn how permits are allowed to MPs. This is a day time robbery. Bond Scam, Sugar Scam, Substandard Medicines, permits to MPs , Central Bank salary issue and the list continues...GOD bless SL...There is no future...

The politicians will take care of themselves and their purses before the Parliament is dissolved. In my mind Government will create trouble in the country resulting in some deaths, place the blame on the JVP, ban them as a party and will say climate is not suitable to hold elections

    Gt Tuesday, 14 May 2024 12:26 PM

Reduce cost of living before spending our money, why should the people of sl pay for mps to live in luxury, all they do is steal and trample on our rights, come election I hope what happened in el Salvador happens in sl, president of el Salvador is investigating his whole cabinet of ministers for corruption of all kinds, we need to do same, name and shame and retrieve stolen funds/property

    Aruna Tuesday, 14 May 2024 12:38 PM

What if he heard wrong or mischief information?

Mohamed Adham Tuesday, 14 May 2024 01:13 PM

They would have already lined up buyers for their Permits. We know the sort these scumbags are....

    Shera Tuesday, 14 May 2024 03:27 PM

Ranil can stop this madness if he chooses to; it is happening under his watch. The fact that such a permit has passed the approval process is appalling. It signals to the public that MPs are rewarded for doing jack while the majority of people continue to suffer the consequences of government corruption.

    Sambo Tuesday, 14 May 2024 07:35 PM

To start with he should be the president next year to promise such things. Why is our people so dumb and listen to all his crap talk.

Nishantha Abeysinghe Tuesday, 14 May 2024 08:44 PM

Can we expect anything less from these leeches . Whilst taxing 36 percent from our salaries sucking blood from the general public funds. Chase them away.

Moh Sleiman Wednesday, 15 May 2024 01:17 AM

SORRY Guys ,Sri Lankans are bloody stupid, you guys keep making the same mistake for Half a bottle of KASSIPU and Packet of lunch, and then cry for your stupidy, and then vote for the same THIEVES,Wake up please. Please dont make another mistake.

Sam Silva Wednesday, 15 May 2024 02:13 AM

This person needs to come up with more concrete evidence to support his statement.

    Appuhamy Wednesday, 15 May 2024 05:43 PM

@Sam - are you living in SL? There will never be concrete evidence open to the public on underhand laws that are passed in a corrupt govt like what we have. Did you agree that MPs can get a full Govt paid pension after just 5 years in parliament? No. This is just another one like that. Just bend down and and take it, but don't try to shoot the messenger.
