Colombo, August 22 (Daily Mirror) - Opposing bail, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peeris told court that since the charges were under the Public Property Act, granting bail required special reasons.

“At this stage, there are no such special reasons to grant bail to this suspect. The charges fall under the Public Property Act, which requires special reasons for bail. I request Your Honour to treat this case not as an ordinary criminal case, but as one with serious criminal allegations. The law must be equal to all. Spending State funds in this manner is not justifiable. This is a clear misappropriation of public funds. How can one claim it as an official visit when in reality it was a private visit and then take money like this? Even the suspect himself has said in his own statement that it was not an official visit but a private one. The investigation is not yet over. There are more suspects to be taken into custody. Lady Justice must be blind and I urge you to base your decision solely on the facts presented,” Peeris said.

If one were to look at this issue in the right context RWs return journey from NY via London is normal. If the President requested a stop over the airline he was travelling would have given it. Generally they would not have charged an additional fare. The stay in UK is on account of First Lady receiving her doctorate. The country should be proud of the stature of the first lady unlike the aunties as first lady. This even if done by him it should have been taken in the proper context. Some time ago Comrade president went to Thamuthegame we were tole to visit his mother. It is a private trip. Did he go by bus or train? No he used the official vehicle and used petrol provided by the tax payer. Obviously his security details would have accompanied the comrade. Now how can he use the security paid by the tax payer to give him security on a private trip? These JVP comrades are hypocrites, mean and full of hatred. Imagine RW being asked to be with the common criminals, drug addicts.

Its a ceremony for the first lady which boost country's image there for its a official visit. Once you become president, its impossible to distinguish between private and official travel

This is a good eye opener for all politicians not to use public funds for personal visits/matters. This is not the first person who used public funds for private visit. There could be many more. Successive goverments did nothing on this issue and gave a free hand to politicians. This arrest and remand will put a stop on politicians using public money for private visits

Past is gone but SL is lucky we have people like you who work your butt out to ensure a just and honest society. Your leadership in this case and Deshabandu cases is commended.
