Kekirawa, Jan 26 (Daily Mirror) - The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) conducted the first crackdown on bribery in the private sector under the powers conferred by the new Anti-Corruption Act.

The Commission said that the Anti-Corruption Act No. 09 of 2023 has empowered the Bribery Commission to address bribery in the private sector, overriding powers that previously applied only to bribery or corruption in the public sector.

Accordingly, the first raid on a bribery offense in the private sector was conducted on Friday (26) by officials with the approval of the Commission.

They arrested an accountant, who is also the Human Resources Manager of a private hotel, for allegedly soliciting a sexual bribe from a female employee.

The arrest was made based on a complaint filed by a resident of Mahavilacchiya.

The female employee, working in a private hotel, was promised full payment of 75% of the current service charges, along with arrangements for her employment to be confirmed by higher officials in the future.

Also, she was assured that necessary arrangements would be carried out to allow her to continue her work without any trouble.

In return, the accountant of the hotel allegedly brought her to a room in a private hotel in Habarana for sexual intercourse.

QBribery Commission officials arrested the suspect and he is to be produced before the Kekirawa Magistrate's Court.

And when are they going to investigate bribery and corruption by politicians , especially ruling party members?

    Sleuth Saturday, 27 January 2024 02:10 AM

Good one. But remember if politicians approve this audit on themselves (like what happens in Singapore), the staff number in the Sleuth Agency will have to increased exponentially. What more? These local politicians will throw D J Trump look like an angel.

Bribery De Commission Saturday, 27 January 2024 02:32 AM

The mission statement of the , Bribery Commission should be clearly written and followed. Why don't catch the people involved in the sugar scan, coal scam, garlic scam.

    Yosith Friday, 26 January 2024 04:41 PM

Good move. Soliciting of such favour must be rampant is this frustrated society of ours.

    Steve Friday, 26 January 2024 05:05 PM

Big deal. Bribery Commission don't waste your time on such activities. Go after the big time bribery of politicians by the Private Sector.

    Ruwani Saturday, 27 January 2024 10:45 AM

Aren't you happy that this woman got some solace because of the timely piece of legislation? You should be ashamed of yourself. Or are you one of those scumbags who lure helpless women to hotels?

    Farieze Friday, 26 January 2024 05:53 PM

    Gerry Saturday, 27 January 2024 02:11 PM

Capture power or elected to power?

    Johan Friday, 26 January 2024 06:20 PM

Actually this is police department work. Our bribery commission should be dissolved and this building could be used for other purposes. When millions of rupees plundered from state through political influence resulting in bankruptcy of the country not a single case followed up.Why we should pay salaries to the commission staff and the rent to the building.

    DISGUSTED Sunday, 28 January 2024 05:56 PM

Johan exactly, some public servants find their way into TOP JOBS with political influence SAD but TRUE. WE NEED AN INDEPENDENT INQURY INTO ALL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS RUNNING AT A LOSS, SO WE CAN CLEAN OUT THE PUBLIC SERVICE AND START ON A CLEAN SHEET.

    sachith Friday, 26 January 2024 08:12 PM

    This is really good move.

SSZ KHAN Friday, 26 January 2024 08:45 PM

Women should be educated thru media about their right to report sexual misconduct by fellow empliees...

    Jayantha Friday, 26 January 2024 08:47 PM

Very good job. Probably he should be charged for intensional rape too.

    Dee Friday, 26 January 2024 09:32 PM

She should join the parade from Galle to Colombo to promote tourism after voting for the subversives into power!

raj soma Friday, 26 January 2024 11:52 PM

Lets go after everyone who take bribes, favors and kick backs (Politicians ) the country will developed. Gt Saturday, 27 January 2024 12:05 AM

Even the women we sent to work abroad are sexually harassed by management, one such case in a company named marafi, my friends contract was sold to this company from samasco ( they didn't provide drinking water or means to shower), now her manager at marafi gives her too much work if she refuses his attention, tells her if she reports it he will make everyone accuse her and report her to police, this is in saudi, they hold them for ransom almost saying If you want to leave you need to pay 8 laks because they sold her contract to marafi and they make it impossible to leave

    Krishan Saturday, 27 January 2024 01:56 AM

I have agreed with all the comments. The fact of the matter is she willfully participated and went to police. If she really wants to stop this she could have informed the police before participating the offense.

Indra Dasa Saturday, 27 January 2024 03:09 AM

This new CIABOC with the powers to investigate allegations of bribery or corruption as per reviewed new legislation in private sector as well as the public sector is a good step taken by this government, with or with out knowing that in-coming new government and the president, elected by the majority of Sri Lankans, going to add more powers to CIABOC , and back dated for the last 30 years, to get all corrupted politicians , Government officials as well as Private sector employers behind the bars for a very long periods of time .

    Don Saturday, 27 January 2024 03:50 AM

These guys suddenly woken up. Their wires are crossed. Before investigating private sector do bloody job of checking public money related corruption. When that is cleared, many other businesses related corruption has no ground to stand. Then follow human rights related corruption involving private sector players. Whole country is full of unprofessionals. Tribal, frog in a well, failed state like no other.

    Waco Saturday, 27 January 2024 04:24 AM

These laws do not apply to Some Politicians. They can take bribes of any type and still live happily.

    sam silva2 Saturday, 27 January 2024 06:06 AM

most of the female employees, especilaly new, of Kandalama hotel have been even RAPED by directors of hotel, let alone solicit. Bribery commission must investigate immediately. most private companies directors solicit sex from subordinates and take them on sex trips. its rampant in sri lanka now.

    Nodaking Saturday, 27 January 2024 07:46 AM

The police are good at harrassing small fry and taking orders from big crooks. Let's get together people and kick the ranil rajapaksa criminal syndicate out.

    Terrence K Saturday, 27 January 2024 08:35 AM

Very good move because high ups in the private sector have not been brought to book in the past as they misused their powers and many females were rewarded promotions and overseas trips side stepping the deserving males for rewards. Even some married families have undergone many broken families because of these illicit relationships. Another curse to our society is the Face Book and some other media which have circumvented the good features of these media to create a promiscuous society.!!!!!!!!

    Ravi Saturday, 27 January 2024 08:55 AM

Please investigate properly. Accountants are very unpopular in the hotel industry because they have to take tough decisions when it comes to controls. So possibility of getting fixed by the other employees are very high.

    Tubby Saturday, 27 January 2024 09:04 AM

(CIABOC ) Should appoint a top cat to get hold of corrupt individuals from all sectors to control this kind of unacceptable behaviour in the country that now out of control if this nation to move forward we need proper procedures to proscute offenders without any obstruction to produce in courts

Mary Sathesan Saturday, 27 January 2024 02:25 PM

I thought it was compulsory for all female employees to sleep with the boss or get fired.

    Tony Saturday, 27 January 2024 06:58 PM

What is the CAIBOC track record for 2022? How many complaints? How many prosecutions?

    Patcitz Saturday, 27 January 2024 10:59 PM

Nowadays, it is an order of lifestyle, where small people are trapped in trouble, while big guys are roaming freely entitled as Members of Parliament and Ministers involving unpardonable crimes.
