Colombo,July 28 (Daily Mirror)- The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has urged the government to hold long-overdue Provincial Council elections without further delay.

In a statement issued today, PAFFREL highlighted that the terms of the Provincial Councils expired on September 20, 2014—marking an 11-year gap without fresh elections. As per existing legislation, elections should be held every six years, yet successive governments have failed to initiate the required legal and administrative processes.

PAFFREL stressed that the delay has become a growing concern among the public and civil society organizations, who have repeatedly demanded the restoration of the electoral process at the provincial level.

Legal experts cited by PAFFREL argue that the continued failure to hold elections violates constitutional provisions and democratic norms. The organization also cautioned that any move to amend the Provincial Council Act or the Provincial Council Elections Act at this stage could cause further delays.

Instead, PAFFREL emphasized the urgent need to prioritize fulfilling the legal obligations to ensure that elections are held promptly, restoring public trust and upholding democratic governance.

The present decentralisation of administrative functions from the central government to provincial level by appointing a senior administrative officer to oversee functions in each Province without a Provincial Council is the only solution sans elections to Provincial Councils should be the stepping stone towards abolition of the Provincial Council system which has become a white elephant to fulfill the aspirations of greedy political parties.

We may have more politicians than most other countries. We have 225 MPs, 455 Provincial Councillors and innumerable others in 341 (yes 341) Municipal Councils, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas. Is this worth it for a country in our present state.

45 Members in the legislature is more than enough. Maximum 15 Ministeres for ALL Porfolios. There could be around 30 Deputy Ministers, if required. NO NEED OF Provincial Councils. Municipal Ward Members assisted by Grama Niladharis could fulfil all requirements of the Tax Payer.
