High income earners should look after low income earners: Siyambalapitiya

While highlighting that only ten percent of the population will have to pay increased income tax , the State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said those who pay increased taxes should look after the low income earners who are affected by the economic down turn.

The state minister was referring to the proposal under which those who earn monthly income of Rs 100,000 will be subjected to income tax.

"Half of those who earn less than Rs 100,000 cannot afford to have three meals daily. Those who earn a high revenue should look after the low income earners," the state minister said.(Yohan Perera)

With only 460,000 individuals having tax files in a population of 22million it appears those who have tax files are victims of a grave injustice. uneven playing field. Govt must increase the taxpayers. doctors force the hospitals to share the list of doctors earning g via private practice. Lawyers just go behind them and force them to open tax files. Do your part then automatically we can have wealth distribution

Ask ICTA in collaboration with Pickme cargills Sathosa Atlas Promate etc to develop a payment gateway type App and have rich foster families dispatching dry rations every month to 3 or 4 poor families without giving cash. Ask corporates to do CSR projects where exercise books and shoes etc are purchased in bulk ànd dispatched to schools and the principal to distribute to the needy. A community app with a payment gateway.

Eg with the help of an NGO donate a milk cow to one family, or on a very softloan. likewise to another family donate a chicken pen and 20 day old chick's. once a month for 4 months a bag of chicken feed as needed. give sathosa small freezer bicycles like ice cream bikes to sell fresh fish at wholesale price to villages. Increase wew maalu. basically protein to the villages strategy. we can do it.

There are lot of famers each more than 100000.00 but they never been tax. Farmer who has 2 Acers of paddy field can easily earn 200000.00 but these guys have never been taxed.

Why are people grumbling about the tax threshold of Rs. 100,000/- per month, that is Rs. 1,200,000/- per annum, which is to be introduced? Before President Gotabaya messed up by increasing the tax threshold to Rs. 3,000,000/- per annum to benefit his cronies, the tax threshold was Rs. 500,000/- per annum for many years and all who earned more than that had to pay tax.

What about people like you who amass wealth by corrupt means and those are unrecorded income, gained via not producing a good or service, but via corruption. Same goes to so many corrupt public servants. Those individuals' spending power is huge. No one should mind if a person earns a high income via non corrupt means by producing goods and services. Problem is so many of you earn huge unrecorded and untraceable income via currupt means. Non one has ever been punished. That is why SL has gone to the stage where it is. Agree, SL people are also stupid to elect those of you year after year. They get what they deserve.

I think the minister is in a different country, nowadays LKR 100,000 is equivalent to LKR 30,000 in Sri Lanka. What can we do for LKR 100Know? you better visit the market and see how item prices are, it's skyrocketed. With children's education expenses it is difficult to live with a family who earns 100k salary per month. Please think of a realistic figure for tax calculation and act like a brave person.

Why are they low income earners in the first place ? Is it because they don't do anything productive or have got no skill required or just being highly underpaid? You must regularise the minimum pay and ensure that those who work get a decent pay. Taxing those who earn more than Rs 100000 per month is going to be counter productive.

Yes, I agree. Get all the corrupted money from the politicians, their henchmen, corrupted businessmen .. etc and create a revenue model using that thumping money. You all are given ministry positions and have easy life while enjoying the benefits but how about people like us who work hard to earn... do you think it's fair to pay high tax coz of your corruptions???

For once you have spoken a mouthful but can't you start this program by getting the funds pilfered from the public purse and the commissions received through the different scams and monies siphoned overseas and money laundered by the Rajapakse regime and others utilized initially as the saying goes "OTHERS WILL FOLLOW BY EXAMPLE INITIATED BY LEGISLATORS".
