Colombo, Sept. 4 (Daily Mirror) - The Colombo High Court today ordered that the corruption case against former Minister Chandrani Bandara be taken up again on September 23.
When the matter was called, the counsel representing the Bribery Commission sought the court’s permission to amend the indictment, which was subsequently granted.
The judge directed that a copy of the amended indictment be provided to the defence counsel and instructed the defence to file any preliminary objections after reviewing it.
Former Minister Bandara is accused of corruption for allegedly appointing her associates to various positions while serving as Minister of Women’s and Child Affairs and Dry Zone Development during the previous “Yahapalana” government. The original indictment was formally served before the Colombo High Court on June 6, after which she was released on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each.
It is alleged that during her tenure, she improperly influenced ministry officials to appoint H.M. Chandrawansha as Project Director of the Ministry of Dry Zone Development and secured other appointments for close associates without following proper procedures.
The Bribery Commission filed the case on May 20, accusing her of 11 counts of corruption committed between January 14 and January 31, 2019, offences punishable under the Bribery Act.
