Heat wave warning issued for Colombo and several other Districts



Colombo, Feb. 21 (Daily Mirror)- The Meteorology Department today issued a ‘Caution’ level heat warning for some places in North-Western province and Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota and Moneragala District.

The Heat index Advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre said that the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body is expected to increase up to ‘Caution’ level at some places in North-western province and Gampaha, Colombo, Hambantota and Moneragala District.

According to the Meteorology Department, temperature at 39-45 Celsius is considered caution level and fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity while continuing activity could result in heat cramps.

People are expected to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible at job sites and check up on the elderly and the sick while indoors.

The Department warned not to leave children unattended inside vehicles and limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated while outdoors.

People are advised to wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing during heat waves.
