Heat to ease with afternoon rains

Colombo, April 9 (Daily Mirror) - Amid sweltering daytime conditions, the Meteorology Department has warned of afternoon thundershowers across several parts of the island, with the public urged to remain vigilant over lightning and gusty winds.

According to the department, showers or thundershowers are expected at a few places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Mannar districts after 2.00 p.m., while much of the rest of the country will experience mainly dry weather.

It said early morning misty conditions could affect parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and the Ampara district, potentially reducing visibility.

The department also cautioned that thundershowers may be accompanied by temporary localized strong winds and severe lightning, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva and North-Western provinces and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

The public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by lightning activity.

Meanwhile, due to the apparent northward movement of the sun, it will be directly overhead across Sri Lanka between April 5 and 15.

Areas including Chilaw, Bingiriya, Halmillawewa, Panduwasnuwara, Gokarella, Kawudupelella, Koppaveli and Kirankulam will experience the sun overhead tomorrow (9) at around 12:12 noon.
