Heat index reaches ’Caution Level’ in several parts of SL - Met. Dept.

Colombo, July 31 (Daily Mirror) - The Department of Meteorology has issued a heat index advisory warning that temperatures felt on the human body are expected to rise to ‘Caution Level’ in certain areas today (August 1).

According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, this increase in the heat index is forecast for parts of the Northern, Eastern, and North-Central provinces, as well as the Monaragala and Hambantota districts. The heat index is calculated by combining the effects of temperature and relative humidity, and reflects the actual sensation of heat on the body.

Authorities have issued several safety guidelines in light of the warning:

At Job Sites: Stay well-hydrated and take regular breaks in shaded areas.

Indoors: Check on elderly individuals and those with health issues.

In Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.

Outdoors: Limit strenuous activity, seek shade, and keep hydrated.

Clothing: Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing.
