Hatton railway station in darkness amid fuel shortage

The Hatton Railway Station continues to remain in darkness at night due to a lack of fuel for its backup generator, despite repeated requests to the Railway Department, officials said.

Power supply to the station has been disrupted intermittently in recent days due to bad weather and strong winds, according to Station Master Janaka Fernando. Although the station is equipped with a large generator, it cannot be operated due to insufficient fuel.

Fernando said that he has been receiving numerous complaints from passengers who travel by train at night, as the station remains without power during outages.

He further said that the Railway Engineering Division has issued a directive stating that the generator should only be operated if the fuel tank contains more than 20% fuel. Currently, the generator has only 17% fuel, making it unusable under the existing guidelines.

The Station Master said that a letter was sent in April requesting 50 litres of diesel for the generator, but there has been no response from the department to date. He noted that 50 litres would be sufficient to power the generator for around five months.
