Colombo, Feb 24 (ICC) - Sri Lanka’s T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga has been suspended for two international matches after his accumulated demerit points reached five within a 24-month period following his latest breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, for which he received a 50 percent fine and three demerit points.

Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.

Hasaranga’s five demerit points convert to two suspension points. As two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first for the player or player support personnel, Hasaranga stands suspended from Sri Lanka’s first two T20Is against Bangladesh next month.

The incident occurred after the end of the match, when Hasaranga confronted umpire Lyndon Hanibal to criticise him over a decision.

Meanwhile Afghanistan player Rahmanullah Gurbaz has also been penalised. He has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the same match.

Rahmanullah was found to have breached article 2.4 of the Code, which relates to “Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Rahmanullah’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the second offence in a 24-month period, taking his cumulative demerit points to two.

The sanction was imposed on Rahmanullah for changing the grip of his bat on the field of play despite being repeatedly warned not to do so.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for formal hearings.

On-field umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Raveendra Wimalasiri, third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and and fourth umpire Ranmore Martinez levelled the charges.

Level 2 breaches carry a penalty of between 50 and 100 per cent of a player’s match fee and three or four demerit points while Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

    Captain fool

    Ram Saturday, 24 February 2024 10:00 PM

After losing a game placing the blame on an Umpire is very low. Hasaranga should be removed as Captain for the blame he placed on an Umpire's failure to call a no-ball when the ball was waist high. People whose heads get swollen are unfit to captain a country

Uncle Paradise Saturday, 24 February 2024 11:43 PM

In this case, we lost the match by 3 runs. The no-ball would have given 1 run and a free hit, where we could've at least leveled the runs. While it was not the end of the world for Hasaranga to behave this way, the umpire did right royally mess up in this instance.

    Francis Sunday, 25 February 2024 03:48 AM

Yes when looking at Hasaranga he behaves like an uneducated person, sometime thinks and try to portray that he is great guy and a captain. No room should be left for such fellows to bring the game to disrepute. Remove him from captaincy and set a high standard for the game.

Totally agree. Having said that, were these rules/codes in place when Arjuna confronted umpires Ross Emerson and Darrell Hair during the time Murali was 'called' for chucking? If I'm not mistaken Arjuna got off scot free.

While not condoning action of Hasaranga, I would like to ask Mr. Ram to watch the vedio clip again. The ball was just above the shoulder, clearly making it a no ball.Atleast the umpire should have checked with the 3rd umpire. Bad thing is the errant umpire going scot free even without even a reprimand.

SPILLED AND SPOILED OUR NATION. WHAT IS THIS FELLOW HAVE EXPERIENCED FOR CAPTAINCY. ONLY BIG MOUTH JUST ONLY THREE MATCHES.

    Manura Sunday, 25 February 2024 12:08 PM

Yes put a royalist to captain Sri Lanka. All these guys from in educated background should be removed

Rodney Bartholomeusz Saturday, 24 February 2024 10:49 PM

Sportsmanship before pride and money is the key. Top players bow to the decision of the umpire. Selection of captaincy should be given to players who could handle any situation.

    Inshi Saturday, 24 February 2024 11:15 PM

Captains should learn to set an example to the players. The fans look up to them and if they let their emotions get the better of them, then the position is questionable however wrong or unfair the decision is.

Inexperience and arrogance can be dangerous and expensive assets.

Selfish unpatriotic Hannibal Sunday, 25 February 2024 01:04 AM

Why did Hannibal complain to the ICC ? As a senior umpire he should have settled it with the cricket board. He should have see the bigger picture denying Hasaranga matches is counterproductive to our country.A cheap action by Hannibal.

Nirmal Sanjeewa Sunday, 25 February 2024 01:07 AM

We don't want this umpire anymore. People will hoot him. He is now more likely to give decisions against us.

Gon Haraka Sunday, 25 February 2024 01:10 AM

An idiot's problem is that he does not know that he is an idiot

The punishment is too little. Very bad example for the society.

    Rasika Sunday, 25 February 2024 07:43 AM

    Put this ICC rules

    DJ Sunday, 25 February 2024 08:33 AM

He has lost his head. Drop him immediately. He does not play for the country, just for himself.

raj Soma Sunday, 25 February 2024 08:39 AM

The main issue was , the ball was above the waist by many inches.. If people can see on Live telecast ,how did the 3rd and 4th umpires could not... As a captain you don't want to loose any games and when decision goes the wrong way, your blood boils and in spur of the that moment he went after the umpires . Yes, he should have controlled himself being a professional . Hope he will learnt his lesson ....

Hannibal the Cannibal Sunday, 25 February 2024 03:15 PM

Hannibal destroyed our chance to a first ever 200 chase

Big bank balances but a loose tongue, A money rich verbal diarrhoea

    S.H.Moulana Sunday, 25 February 2024 09:28 PM

Cricketers should learn to behave. All our senior players have shown a ver good lesson for the rest follw.

    Terrence K Monday, 26 February 2024 08:27 AM

Sometimes we wonder whether the Gentleman's game has been taken over by Tree Climbers. One of the cardinal principles given by top trainers of cricket academies of the past was respect your Umpires irrespective of the decisions whether right or wrong. These Trainers emphasized that when a batsman goes to the crease he should hold his head high but when he is given out he should return with his head bowed. Nowadays cricketers think no end of themselves even calling his superiors "Sir" is not in their vocabularly and it is infradig"

    Paranamana Monday, 26 February 2024 09:21 AM

This Hasaranga is good at putting Sri Lankan team in trouble. He should have not played cricket for Sri Lanka after sitting out at the World Cup. Now he comes and go as he wishes and the stupid conduct. Another youngster has to take the burden due to this irrratic nitwit

Headache for Cricket Monday, 26 February 2024 08:22 PM

There won't be any issues in Cricket in the future if this man Hasaranga is dropped from the Team.
