Harsha urges Colombo Mayor to repair damaged Independence Square walking path

Colombo, July 14 (Daily Mirror) - Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has urged the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar to immediately repair the walking path at Independence Square, warning that its deteriorating condition poses a safety risk, particularly to elderly walkers.

In a post on X, Dr. de Silva said the walking path, built during former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's tenure as Secretary to the Ministry of Defence around 15 years ago, has become a popular destination for morning walkers.

He said the pathway, once known for being peaceful, refreshing and well-maintained, is now in its worst condition.

"Honestly, I have never seen the path in such disrepair," he said, pointing to rocky protrusions on the surface that could cause walkers, especially senior citizens, to trip and fall.

Dr. de Silva also noted that soil brought to repair sections of the path had remained unused for months, despite the need for urgent maintenance.

Responding in the comments to Dr. de Silva's post, Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar said, "Will share with the UDA ministry and minister. Thank you for taking the time to share this."
