Colombo, March 12 (Daily Mirror) - Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today urged the doctors' trade unions to call off their strike, calling it unreasonable as the government is taking steps to ensure security for doctors and provide necessary facilities.
He told Parliament that police was able to arrest the suspect in connection with the sexual assault of the lady doctor at the Anuradhapura Hospital before 36 hours.
The Minister said there have been several incidents of concern in the hospital premises and said the Acting Hospital Director and the hospital administration have failed to take necessary action to ensure security in the hospital.
He said he learnt about the GMOA strike over the incident only at 10.30 last night and that they could withdraw their strike action even now.
"The GMOA earlier said they will stage a province-wise strike in the North Central Province. But they suddenly decided to resort to a 24-hour islandwide strike action. This is unreasonable as the suspect was arrested before 36 hours and the government is taking steps to ensure doctors' security and provide other facilities. We need to think about the patients as well. People have had to face serious inconvenience due to the sudden strike," he said.
