Colombo, July 10 (Daily Mirror) - The government has taken a decisive step towards enhancing support services for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental conditions, with plans to establish a national network of specialised daycare and therapy centres.
Following high-level discussions held yesterday (July 9) at the Presidential Secretariat, President's Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive concept proposal within two weeks. The initiative, spearheaded by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, aims to introduce a coordinated, nationwide system involving multiple ministries and government agencies, with the Presidential Secretariat providing overall supervision.
A sum of Rs. 250 million, allocated from this year’s budget, will be channelled through the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs to district administrations to support the programme’s rollout. The plan prioritises the development of specialised human resources, a scientifically validated care framework, and clear operational guidelines to ensure consistent, high-quality services.
During the meeting, officials underscored the importance of an integrated, multi-sectoral approach bringing together healthcare professionals, education specialists, and social services to deliver comprehensive care and early intervention for affected children and their families.
Key officials in attendance included Kapila Janaka Bandara, Senior Additional Secretary to the President, K.D.R. Olga, Secretary to the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, Sampath Manthrinayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Infrastructure, and H.A. Hema Perera, Additional Secretary. Also present were Darshani Karunaratne, Director of the Department of Social Services, and senior representatives from health, social services, and rural development ministries.
Medical specialists who contributed to the discussions included Dr. Varuni Rasadi from the Ministry of Health, Dr. Asiri Hewamalage, Deputy Director (Community Health), and Dr. Santhushitha Senadhipathi from Lady Ridgeway Hospital.
The initiative marks a significant national commitment towards improving early childhood intervention services and inclusive care systems for children with developmental challenges in Sri Lanka.
